Sarah Giles
Sarah Giles completed a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Italian and History at The University of Melbourne and went on to complete her post-graduate studies at NIDA ( The National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney Australia) where she specialized in directing.
Her work as a director includes classic and contemporary texts, as well as directing and developing new work. New works include Steven Hopely’s SPOTS as part of the Short & Sweet Festival in Melbourne, the development and conception of Declan Greene’s Home Economics, development and dramaturgy of K.I.J.E. by Joanna Erskine. Short plays include foot by Joanna Erskine and Cut by Catherine Ryan, both of which appeared at The Griffin Theatre in 2009.
Sarah has directed a range of classical and contemporary texts including The Trial, The Real Inspector Hound, Black Comedy, The Maids, The Bald Soprano, Fewer Emergencies: Face to the Wall, The Stronger, The Universal Language, The Herbal Bed and The Bear.
In April of 2010 Sarah will be directing That Face by Polly Stenham for Red Stitch Actors Theatre in Melbourne as well as directing the English Language World Premier of David Gieselmann’s award winning new comedy The Pigeons for The Griffin Theatre’s Independent Season produced by Pearly Productions opening in October of 2010.
As Assistant Director Sarah has worked with Peter Evans on the Melbourne Theatre Company’s Australian Premier of Allan Bennet’s The History Boys, Malthouse Theatre’s Artistic Director Michael Kantor on Tom Wright’s adaptation of Voltaire’s Candide, titled OPTIMISM (appearing at the 2009 Edinbrugh International Festival and The Sydney Festival in 2010) Nick Marchant on Griffin Theatre’s production of Strange Attractor by Sue Smith, and with Steven Soderbergh on the Sydney Theatre Company’s producion of TOT MOM. In 2010 Sarah will be Assistant Director to Andrew Upton on the Sydney Theatre Company’s production of Eugene Oniel’s classic Long Day’s Journey into Night.
In 2009 Sarah was the Affiliate Director in residence at The Griffin Theatre Company in Sydney.
Sarah has traveled extensively and in 2006 performed in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in White Whale Theatre’s production of MacBeth ReArisen.
