Imara Savage

Imara Savage is a theatre and dance artist who is inspired by the work of Philippe Genty, Julie Taymor and Robert Lepage. With a background in various art forms she believes in collaborations across all artistic disciplines. Her work is inspired by her extensive traveling and cross-cultural exploration. Imara received training in dance, music and theatre at Newtown High School of the Performing Arts, and majored in theatre (2nd in NSW). At 17 she co-founded a theatre company and produced shows around Sydney. She graduated from UTS in Communications/International Studies and spent a year in Mexico as part of her degree. She undertook private study in Cuba of Afro Cuban dance and later received a grant to study the dances of North East Brazil. Imara has also worked in Sri Lanka as a writer and with other Human Rights organisations including Oxfam International Youth Parliament, Amnesty Youth Drama Festival, ReconciliAction Youth Group, UTS Human-Rights & Journalism Training Program, Diplomacy Training Program at UNSW. After graduating from NIDA Imara is actively pursuing a career in Opera, because of the possibilities for the ‘total theatre’.

Imara Savage was invited by Playwright’s Australia to attend a 2-day workshop over August 2009 along with other arts and community workers. This 2-day workshop in dramaturgy/community development was the first, leading up to a series of pilot programmes in Western Sydney in outreach playwright development later in 2009 and beyond.

Over two days in August 2009 at Belvoir St Theatre, Imara Savage worked with playwright Kit Brookman and actors Yael Stone and Andre Jewson on the first phase of a development for Brookman’s new play ‘The Girl Upstairs’.
